Sagittarius New Moon - December 9, 2007
I've never been one for travel. Fear-inducing Saturn is in my Ninth House of International Expeditions, opposite airline-happy Jupiter. My greatest terror has been of traveling in a country where I can't speak the language, I lose all my belongings and I end up homeless and starving in an alley, tormented by French people who throw snails at me.However, I've more than made up for my nearly landlocked life through another Sagittarian endeavor, higher education. In fact, I
So how did I end up an astrologer, when I have degrees in both cognitive psychology and counseling psychology? I just find it more fascinating, a better model by which I can understand human behavior. Unfortunately, it has only been recently -- with the founding of Kepler College -- that astrology has been incorporated into the Ivory Tower (although it used to be taken pretty seriously before the scientific method relegated it to the New Age wastebin). Mainstream institutions are very closeminded about astrology, and I dropped out of my first PhD program because I was interested in archetypes -- which don't hold up well when you're measuring how quick a sophomore can hit a button on a computer.
Thank the Gods that I found CIIS, where I studied the art of psychotherapy in a spiritually-informed program. I even took my first astrology course there, under the title Cosmos and Psyche. I have no regrets having spent six years of my early adulthood in academic settings, although I will literally be paying for my education for the next 20-odd years.
What does my story have to do with the New Moon?
This Sunday's lunation occurs in Sagittarius, the sign that seeks to expand one's horizons, whether through travel or study. And the Sun-Moon conjunction is squared by paradigm-shattering Uranus, which is also the planet that rules astrology. During the New Moon, you may feel inspired to take on a course of study, plan a trip to Burma or promote your services. Sag is an inspiring fire sign, giving you the enthusiasm to convert others to your side or to take on the Great Books. Just be aware that any conventional course of study or travel plan will be upset by the planet of surprises and left turns. If you attempt to spread the Word, your message may come across as shocking or jarring ... or maybe you'll try to proselytize a familiar message, only to be disrupted by someone who challenges your belief system.
After all, Uranus is in Pisces. Sagittarius governs world religions, major schools of philosophy, higher education ... the Big Ideas. Sag trades in theories and opinions and belief systems, whereas Pisces chucks it all out the window and goes for direct experience of the Divine. What good are ideas, if they hold you back from connecting directly with the Source? You can talk and write about God, or you can just surrender to Him or Her.
Which would you choose?
The Fine Print: This New Moon falls at 17 Sagittarius, and will impact natives with planets or angles between 15 and 20 degrees of the mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces).

Why I have the direct experience of course, Jeffrey! Surrender to my higher power when I'm dragging my heels, and generally just in touch wiht the spirit of all that is.;-)
Anyway, besides that, I do like study, and different cultures, and languages, and compartive religion(Sun in my 9th Hse)
But like you said-- I identify too--Saturn is *also* there, right on my Sun, and not far form Neptune and I fear travel, and make excuses not to go far.
I sometimes have loved travel I have to say--but just as often if not more---phobia time.:-/

Interestly I received your e-mail in my inbox. It is very beguiling, but I do not remember subscribing to or receiving it before. My Gemini husband and I (Leo with Gemini rising) have just decided to embark on a new side hobby. We are both very "busy" people, involved in many activities, and have both been studying astrology for decades. My husband is quite like you in terms of the educational degrees at an early age; however his profession is an educator. He was called the "professional student" by many of our peers for a long tme.
But, the point is, this weekend, I had already set aside the time to start this new venture and you have just confirmed that this is what we should do. I do not want to divulge exactly the nature of this astrological site until I put it online, but will keep you informed as it progresses because, somehow, I believe that your e-mail was the inspirational impetus I needed to stop proscratinating and get this off the ground. I have always liked to read whatever you had to say, you are insightful and educational.

This New Moon has had me concerned from when I was first aware of it a year ago. Seems like it's to be a threshold - or a major decision-making point. Sure enough, this is when I have to make a presentation that will affect my career for several years to come, plus the man I'd like to spend the rest of my life with is coming to visit. Hunh! I now expect surprises, sudden changes in plans, but how to be firm without panic or complete derailment? Maybe the hoped-for track is merely to be back on track by the next new moon, either in the relative stability of where I am now, or having made an inch of forward motion.
Or will it turn into a true stepping-off point?
At any rate, your writing is always helpful! That nightmare of starving in an alley in an unknown land happens far too often - in small social or larger career situations, where "winging it" just doesn't work. But one wakes up from a nightmare. Or plans for that trip to the strange country. Or at least takes a small jar of peanut butter for extra sustenance. Better than being pelted with snails.
So I read your messages and I try to wake up, prepare, look right and left, and not panic!

Hey Jeffrey
I also have Saturn in my 9th house opposite Jupiter and I love to travel. I find it absolutely thrilling. Although the french throwing snails at me doesn't sound like fun. odd that. But I am wondering what suprises are in store with Uranus(in 6th) Squaring Sun/Moon(in 3rd). Looks like I'll have my foot in my mouth again.
LOL! I learned the hard way having Saturn/Pluto conjunct in the 9th is not conducive to comfortable travel abroad. I spent a school year attending school in Finland (it counted towards my degree) and it was very, very tough. Yes, i learned a lot and gained a truly valuable perspective about my fellow humans but i was homesick most of the time. So I'm wary of traveling abroad. Since then I stuck to living up and down the West Coast before settling down in the house I grew up in! However, I love the Internet and being able to connect with others from around the World, so there you go!
Good post on what may prove a kick-butt New Moon (sets off the September Eclipse degree)!
Thanks all, for your comments :)
Come to Portugal: we have snails too!
And! - we would never waste them by trowing them at someone. They're too delicious! (Really: you should try some, hehe ;)
*******
An astrologer who has a French wife told me exactly the same thing :)
