New Moon Solar Eclipse in Virgo - September 22, 2006
This Solar Eclipse is the second New Moon in Virgo this year. The first one was at 0 Virgo and the eclipse is at 29 Virgo. The last degree of any sign is called the anaretic degree. One of my teachers taught me that when a planet transits through any sign, themes related to that sign occur when the planet enters (0) and leaves (29) that sign. Other astrologers have also noted that people born with a planet in the last degree of a sign feel an urgency to move on to the next sign. The astrologer formerly known as Kelli Fox writes, "it means that you are very close to mastering an important lesson of the universe, but you have not quite achieved success." Cafe Astrology and Eric J. Uberseder also have wise things to say about the final degree. However you put it, this eclipse will be ultra-Virgo in nature. We have to incorporate the lessons of the Virgin in order to progress spiritually. So, what does this entail? A Solar Eclipse is a New Moon conjunct a Lunar Node. We have the chance to start anew. However, the Sun and Moon conjoin the South Node, which relates to our past karma -- where we are coming from. Old patterns (South Node) are obscured (Solar Eclipse). We feel an urgency to master the realm of Virgo, yet our lack of consciousness about entrenched habits makes it difficult to move forward.
The last degree of Virgo is akin to the day before Fall (Libra). The harvest is over, and the seasons of Death are imminent. The weather is getting cold. The days will become shorter. Those of us living in the Northern Hemisphere will be spending more time indoors.
Virgo prepares us for partnership (Libra). Remember the advice that you can't be ready for a relationship until you've got your own house in order? Well, that's Virgo's job. When we attend to ourselves through proper self-care (diet, exercise) and skill-building (apprenticeship, practice), we feel competent. Once we have stream-lined our own life, we are ready to survive the cold and bundle up with someone else. We are (metaphorically) storing up enough grain for the colder months.
This Solar Eclipse is squared by Pluto. I've mentioned before how Virgo relates to the myth of Ceres/Demeter, in which Hades' abduction of Persephone into the Underworld resulted in her mother Demeter's neglect of the earth's vegetation due to depression (hence, winter).
The Lord of the Underworld can help bring to the surface those aspects of our past that have resulted in a compulsive living-out of the Virgo archetype: eating disorders, over-exercising, rigidity, hyper-criticism. Pluto transformed Persephone from a girl into a woman -- since some psychoanalysts see anorexia as a way for females to ward off adulthood, Pluto can heal these mother-daughter issues and allow females to accept their changing bodies. Of course, transitioning into adulthood is a kind of death, but so is moving into the second half of the zodiac.
Fortunately, after each death comes a new life. The end of adolescence signals the birth of adulthood. When we master Virgo's realm -- by letting go of anything that obstructs efficient performance of our bodies and routines -- we are ready to move on to the next level.
This eclipse will mostly impact those people with planets and angles in the last degrees of mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) and the first degrees of cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn). If you have a birthday around March 20, June 21, September 22 or December 21, then this eclipse will be hitting your Sun -- your sense of identity.

Great post on this eclipse and especially good info on the anaretic degree. Thank you. The idea that "people born with a planet in the last degree of a sign feel an urgency to move on to the next sign" makes me want to speculate on the implications vis a vis secondary progression. If/when that planet moves into the next sign by secondary progression, do those people experience some kind of relief, awakening, or major transition? Above and beyond what one normally experiences when a planet changes sign by secondary progression? Depending on retrograde motion and the motion of the particular planet that wouldn't necessarily be early in life...or ever. For example, I have natal Jupiter at 29:06 Capricorn RETROGRADE. It will station direct (by secondary progression) when I'm in my 70's and I won't live to see it in Aquarius. Food for thought. I'll be mulling on this for awhile. And if I see it in the natal chart of someone I know, I'll be asking questions. If you, Jeffrey, or anyone else reading this has some comments, I'll be interested. Peace--Doreen
So should I be worried?? Virgoan energy always makes me nervous and I'm on the Virgo-Libra cusp.
Alicia,
Looking at your birthdate, it looks like you have Saturn in Virgo, which can relate to a fear of or discomfort with Virgoan energy, and it was set off by the Pisces lunar eclipse a few weeks ago.
This solar eclipse will be closely conjunct your Sun (I'm assuming you are a 0 Libra instead of a 29 Virgo?). Think of it as an opportunity for emerging parts of yourself to blossom. I imagine something significant about your sense of identity -- or perhaps an important male figure in your life -- will be revealed to you. And since this eclipse will be part of your Solar Return, your sense of self -- how you shine -- will be front and center for the next year.
Happy Birthday!
Jeff
April Elliott Kent has written an excellent article on this eclipse.
I find it amazing that astrology writers can take the same basic ingredients (Virgo, Sag, Pluto, Node) and come up with different tasty concoctions.
hi
Thanks for your interesting comments on the solar eclipse. My brithdate is 19 March, 1962. Could you give more details on how the eclipse with impact on my identity (sun)?
thanks
Jo
Jo,
For anyone with their Sun in very-late Pisces, this New Moon solar eclipse will be opposing your Sun. Oppositions usually manifest either in relationships, or in the feeling that something has culminated -- something has to give, you've reached a make-or-break point.
Hence, it is a stressful time, as the desire for order and micro-management is in conflict with your Piscean need to just let things be, to not really concern yourself with earthly matters. This could involve somebody in your life "acting out" the Virgo energy, or in your having to make a decision along the lines of "Should I stay or should I go?"
What these two signs do have in common is the notion of service -- whether it be practical or spiritual -- and this is one way to bridge the gap.
Hi, I'm interested in astrology and have been in the process of learning about it whilst constructing my own birth chart.
This lunar eclipse interested me quite a lot so I decided to search on the internet for info. and this was definately the best thing I have read so far. However it has now left me wondering what the effects of this may be on myself...if any.

Angela,
Thank you for your kind feedback. May I suggest you inquire about a consultation? I generally do not analyze specific charts in the comments section. I prefer to use this as a forum to help readers understand the basic principles at work. (I'm already familiar with Alicia, and Jo has a birthdate that is close to one of the dates I mentioned in my post.)
This is interesting. I was born 9:15 pm on sept 22 1967. the eclipse hits me right on at 29:20. I am trying to see the effect on me but can't find a consistent answer. Will it be that noticeable really? Ghoul22
Upon reading your home page i was not trying for a reading in the comments. I apologize. I am just trying to get a bead on what it really means to be so close to an eclipse astrologically. This is an elusive subject with so many "interpretations".For example is it relationships where it will be felt or in the house of the sun itself.(5th)

ghoul22,
Yes, I believe this eclipse will be significant, since it is falling exactly on the degree of your Sun. "Where" it will fall depends on which house tenants your Sun.
Sonia requested I not publish her chart information, so I had to cut it out and post the rest myself:
Hi Jeffrey,
Good site, interesting comments, and good disposition with people!
I bumped into you site when looking for some info on the Solar Eclipse in Virgo.
I'm a Virgo, [DOB deleted] and have an ancendant in Piscis. So, as you know, I'm worried about the impact this eclipse will have on my life.
So far I've been through a rough time in my relationship sector, and a with a feeling of hopelessness in my career sector .
This has been on since 2003.
My question is: If I have to take the reins of my life- as this eclipse seems to force us to do- , should I leave behind my relationship -husband, 26 years of marriage-, which has proved beneficial at some point in my life but now it's almost "on the rocks"?
Or should I focus on my career, which has been stagnated since 2003?
I get the feeling that Pluto has thwarted all my ambitions...Is it so? Will things look brighter when Pluto leaves Sag?? Will these series of eclipse affect me profundly?
I'm at a cross road of not knowing what to do...which path to take in order to move ahead.Help me!
Sonia
PS: Here's my chart
2006
Please, do not publish my email [no email information is submitted in comments] and chart
I do have my personal vedic astrologer, who has advised me to "stay put" in my marriage till the storm wears away, but I feel soooo unsatisfied so far...!
Dear Sonia,
(1) It is beyond the scope of this blog to analyze charts in the comments section.
(2) I do not feel it is ethical for any astrologer to tell someone whether they should leave their husband. This is a major life decision. If you wanted a consultation I would explore these issues in depth with you, but I do not give advice on such heavy matters.

Thank you for some clarity as to what the heck is going on...I knew it was not Mercury Retrograde but it sure has felt like it. For the past three weeks few people seem to hear me though I believe I speak quite clearly. Born Sept 15, 1949, with Moon is Gemini/Cancer and Rising Leo/Virgo(varies from Astrologer). How will this past Virgo New Moon Eclipse fair into Libra/Scorpio-Oct/Nov? Will this be a good time to stay put rather than make big changes in where one lives and what one does for work? Will it be a good time for taking on new projects that were once started in the past (2003 Nov)?
Thanks for oyur input!!
Please keep my name and email address and webpage anonymous :-)
Thank you for the fantastic post. After analyzing my behaviour in the last few days I sought astrology to see what was causing it. Eclipse on the 22nd is seeming involved.
Dealing with hurt/scars from past relationship stopping me from becoming fully open and involved in a current relationship. Pluto square seems to make sense being that I have Pluto with Uranus in my 6th house...and well... Virgo is ruling said house. Uranus however is falling under Libra although sharing the 6th. So, I am thinking...my over analytical and aim for emotionally letting go is having a time w/ the result of this eclipse. Yes? Is my assumption correct?

I heard that unless an eclipse was exact....not to concern myself about it....this being said to me by a professional astrologer...and he said that it has to be specific to ones location? I live in Florida. Was this particular eclipse total? My Mercury is 29 degrees Virgo in my 7th house.....which is why I ask....and also how long would its effects concern me? Amy
Amy in Florida,
I agree that an eclipse has the most impact when it exactly (or near-exactly) aspects one of your personal planets or angles. However, I don't take location into account for its effect on individuals.
The effects of a Solar Eclipse typically lasts one year. However, as a "sensitive point" it can still be triggered after that.
Thank you very much for this analysis. As a Virgo/Virgo, the 11 September eclipse really intrigued me and I enjoyed reading your post. Astrology is really fascinatinq.
Too eerie to be a coincidence. I have Virgo in the 6th and natal Pluto in Virgo. I've literally had every eating disorder in the book. With Saturn in my 6th for the next 2 years I'm worried these eating disorders will finally catch up to me. Right now I'm suffering through orthorexia and laxative abuse.
Also 6th house deals w/ job issues & I've been laid off my job during the last 2 eclipses in Virgo.
6th house also deals w/ pets, and I've all of a sudden joined ASPCA and become a huge proponent for animal rights.
I've got 2 advanced college degrees so I'm no dummy - Astrology is Truth.
umm im born on september 22 and i want to know... am i a virgo or libra??? sometime i go online and it says virgo ends at september 20? so i dont know... what am i???
