The Jupiter Effect: A matter of proportion

ladybug

The following guest post is by Neith aka Diane Lang.

In chart comparisons, the presence of Jupiter in an interaspect usually indicates that we will enjoy the other person's company -- especially if Venus, his favorite dancing partner, is involved. When we astrologers start checking aspects between two charts, Jupiter and Venus are the planets we love to see, because they help smooth over the rough patches we all run into over the course of a relationship.

However, being a Libra, I'm going to present the other side of the story -- Jupiter squaring the personal planets in synastry. In other words, what happens when you have too much of a good thing? We'll start with a look at the possibilities of a Jupiter/Sun square. The Sun and Jupiter are both expansive forces in the chart -- think Leo (Sun) and Sagittarius (Jupiter). If Jupiter in one chart squares the Sun in the other, we can have a situation where the Jupiter person encourages the Sun person to have unrealistic expectations of what they can accomplish. This sets up a scenario where severe letdowns are in store. Of course, if Saturn shows up too, he will help keep Jupiter in check.

When Jupiter squares the Moon, you may want to consider the phrase "over the Moon" about someone. The emotions are exaggerated and we can find ourselves going on quite an emotional roller coaster ride of Love -- up one day and down the next. It can be fun if you like that kind of excitement … and lots of Fire signs types will line up for the experience!

Let's not forget the effect Jupiter can have on Mercury -- such as making promises he can't possibly keep. Or he gets a little carried away describing this great little restaurant that has the best food in town ... and you get there to find a dive!

Venus/Jupiter squares in synastry lead to that incredible weekend in Vegas where money flows like water and you wake up on Monday wondering what the heck you did -- but it must have been fun, right?! That lasts about as long as it takes to check your credit card charges and realize you are right up to your credit limit. Jupiter can seduce Venus by showering her with gifts, whether he can afford them or not. Throw in a strong Neptune aspect or two, and oh boy ...

Mars and Jupiter?! Remember the time your best friend double dog dared you to do something really stupid, and you did ... to your everlasting embarrassment? Well, that's one possible result of having Jupiter squaring Mars (Actions) in synastry.

Seriously, I love to see two or three good Jupiter connections in synastry, because they bring a spirit of generosity and a willingness to let bygones be bygones. People simply like each other and can always find the humor in just about any situation, all good for keeping a relationship on track -- and someone has to offset dour Saturn!!

Capricorn woman with Pisces on the cusp of her empty Seventh House

Diggy provided a birth time for the empty Seventh House case study (click chart to view).

As a fastidious Virgo Rising, you have "dude, whatever" Pisces on your Descendant. Like Aquarius in yesterday's post, the last sign of the zodiac has two ruling planets. Pisces' traditional ruler is Jupiter, planet of philosophy, idealism and expansion. Neptune, Pisces' modern ruler, was discovered in the 19th century, during the rise of Spiritualism. The God of the Seas concerns mystical yearnings, dissolution of boundaries, the urge to transcend mundane reality. Sounds like Pisces, don't it?

With a Capricorn Sun and Virgo on your Ascendant, you're a fairly structured person, and a little water goes a long way in keeping you from drying out. That's where Pisces comes in. Your fantasy life is focused on the ideal mate, and a relationship may indeed help you move beyond humdrum reality. However, Pisces is the sign of delusion, deception and confusion -- your (potential) spouse may just be a lying, cheating ne'er-do-well. You may be drawn to musicians, poets, addicts, artists, monks, nuns, zookeepers and aides at your local lunatic asylum.

The co-ruling planets of your Seventh House happen to oppose each other (a 180-degree angle). Jupiter is in stable Taurus in your Eighth House of Sex, Death and Shared Investments, while Neptune is in seductive Scorpio in your Second House of Possessions, Finances and Self-Worth. Both the signs and houses inhabited by these planets concern money and value, as well as that fixed-sign possessiveness all too familiar to Taurus and Scorpio. A significant relationship would bring up issues around power, security, and how you share money. Perhaps your spouse would work in the fields of finance or psychotherapy or weed-killing.

Since Jupiter and Neptune oppose each other, the New-Age vibe of having Pisces on your Seventh House cusp is multiplied, exaggerated ... bloated. Jupiter expands the strong Neptunian tendency to leave consensual reality, while Neptune's suggestive influence leads Jupiter to philosophize about mediums, mystics and marijuana.

Use your practical Cap Sun and Virgo Ascendant and Mars to prevent some guy or gal from pulling the wool over your eyes and stealing your inheritance.

Scorpio woman with Gemini on the cusp of her empty Seventh House

Scorp submitted a birth time for the empty Seventh House case study (click chart to view).

You have no planets anywhere near your Seventh House of partnership. All we have to go with is Gemini on your Descendant, or Seventh House cusp. This means that, at the time of your birth, the sign of Gemini was setting on the Western horizon. The sign on the Descendant is always opposite the Rising Sign, which in your case is Sagittarius. Your Rising sign relates to your persona, your physical appearance, how you relate to the world. The sign on the Descendant signifies what you look for in a partner or a partnership. This sign balances out the qualities of your Rising sign.

As a Sag Rising, you are perceived as optimistic, inspiring, a seeker of meaning. Whereas Sagittarius is interested in the Big Ideas, Gemini is attracted to small bits of information. As Sag seeks experiences abroad, Gemini explores the neighborhood. If Sag studies Plato, Gemini reads Page Six.

Gemini is the sign of the Twins. With this sign on the cusp of the Seventh House, you may have two partners, or you may be frequently split in your attentions between two people. As Gemini is a sign known for being superficial or fickle, you may quickly lose interest in a partner, constantly seeking out someone new to stimulate your curiosity. You may also be drawn to Gemini types: writers, journalists, teachers, dexterous people who work with their hands.

For more information on type of person to whom you are attracted, we look at the planet that rules Gemini, Mercury. Your Mercury is in Scorpio at the end of your Tenth House of Career, about 4 degrees shy of the cusp of your Eleventh House of Friends and Groups. You may be drawn to Scorpios like yourself, especially someone involved in associations to which you belong.

Your Mercury is sextile (a 60-degree angle) Jupiter in Virgo in your Ninth House of Travel, Philosophy and Higher Education. This sextile offers a beneficial bridge between these planets of Large (Jupiter) and Small (Mercury), and these planets also happen to be the rulers of your Ascendant (you) and Descendant (your partner). This means there's a good connection based on curiosity and intellectual rapport.

How we turn people off with our planets

Most relationship don't work out, and as much as we'd like to blame the other person, we can only change ourselves. The planets in our charts symbolize the variety of urges we have as human beings: to nurture, create, assert, defend, escape, and so on. Although the expression of any planet can be beneficial, our planets can also be alienating to other people.

Only the challenges of Jupiter through Pluto are listed below, because it is often the hard angles they make to the personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) that bring out their dark sides.

Jupiter

As the big planet, Jupiter has a tendency to exaggerate. With challenging aspects, Jupiter can lead to arrogance, evangelism, going beyond what is necessary, overlooking the details, neglecting the fine print in favor of the big picture. Nobody wants to be lectured or proselytized to. And coming off as too big for one's britches is a turn-off.

Saturn

Fear, a sense of inferiority ... we all have our deficiencies, and that's OK. What counts is how we work with them. All too often, Saturn encourages us to build walls of defensiveness to cover over our feelings of not being enough. We become rigid, inflexible. Or we overcompensate to fix our flaws, only to become a workaholic. Discipline is a virtue, but when you deny your vulnerability, it's hard for people to feel close to you.

Uranus

The world need revolutionaries. Otherwise, life would be stagnant and most people would be living under the dominion of monarchs. But sometimes you rebel just so you can differentiate yourself, taking up a cause and provoking people so much that you end up alienating them. It doesn't matter if you're pro-life or an animal rights activitst, there's a way to fight the power without frightening off your friends.

Neptune

Great art and music is often pulled out of thin air, inspired by the muses and the gods. However, Neptune's propensity for escapism can lead you to lose yourself in drink or virtual worlds, neglecting your daily responsibilities. You may not be hitting rock-bottom with your addiction to crack or massively multiplayer online games, but your unavailability makes intimacy an uphill battle.

Pluto

The lord of the underworld can be an agent of transformation, bringing psychological and physical toxins to the surface to enable healing and regeneration. However, Pluto can also be violating and controlling, digging into other people's dirt and manipulating others for his own gain. Although insight into the human psyche and the ability to root out secrets can be used for good, these same talents used inappropriately can betray trust and make people feel like they've been metaphorically raped.
