On Tuesday, Mars enters Cancer, where he will stay until May 9. The planet of action and sexual desire was previously in this sensitive sign last Fall, and turned retrograde at 12 Cancer, moving backwards into Gemini. If you have any planets or angles in the first 12 degrees of cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn), Mars will be making his third pass over these points. If issues concerning assertion and desire came up for you between October and December, Mars' transit through Cancer will offer some resolution, a sense of closure.

Mars is in its "fall" in Cancer. A no-holds-barred planet in a defensive, sideways-moving sign is not happy. Mars opposes Pluto on Friday. This is the third "hit" of this transit due to Mars' retrograde motion into Gemini. The previous oppositions occurred on September 21 and January 2. In addition to resolving the themes that appeared during the first two passes, this final opposition is more powerful because both planets are in the first degree of the cardinal signs Cancer and Capricorn. (Previously they were in the late degrees of Gemini and Sagittarius). Cardinal signs correspond with major shifts -- the equinoxes and solstices -- and when a planet enters a cardinal sign, its energies are strong.

Mars and Pluto are both aggressive and sexual planets -- Mars on a personal level, and Pluto on a transpersonal level. Pluto is the force of biology and evolution, and brings on destruction in order to bring life to a higher level of organization. However, Pluto also releases the darkness of whatever planet it aspects, and in the case of Mars, the Lord of Underworld unleashes its primal instincts -- which are to rape and pillage. On a global level, this aspect may correspond with ugly acts of violence. Friday also features a New Moon in Pisces tightly conjunct Uranus, the Awakener -- adding a level of unpredictability to the mix. The highest manifestation of this energy can be the use of one's will and ambition to effect powerful change with the help of an illuminated vision. If your idea of love is to be told how you're not measuring up, then this is the week for you! Critical Virgo and her ruling planet Mercury hog the spotlight through Sunday, pushing Venus and Mars off to the sidelines. On Sunday, the Pisces Sun opposes Saturn in Virgo. This is one of the most depressing aspects known to humankind. Saturn limits and weighs down the creative life force of the Sun, the center of the personality. (If you have one.) The Aquarius Sun trines Mars in Gemini on V-Day, reinforcing the mental quality of this most romantic of days. These two yang, willful planets in Air signs can be assertive in their expressions of love, yet -- to be honest -- they'd rather hang out with friends than get all cozy with one person. So this day is actually pretty good for singles, for the energy favors light conversation among groups of people.

On Sunday, Venus enters Aquarius. The mind is favored over the body, and experimentation trumps conventionality. Until March 14, when Venus enters Pisces, traditional notions of love need to be shattered. The big news this week (other than Pluto's ingress into Capricorn last Friday) is Mercury's retrograde cycle in Aquarius, which starts today (Monday) and ends February 18. (Mercury entered his shadow† on February 13 and leaves it on March 10.) For the next three weeks, messages get mixed and communications go awry. Misunderstandings are likely, so it is important to make yourself explicitly clear and to make sure your partner understood you correctly. You can best use this time by discussing old issues in a long-term relationship or by tying up loose ends with exes.

On Tuesday, Venus trines Saturn. The love planet is in Saturn's sign, Capricorn, and in a flowing relationship with the planet of commitment. Venus is taking relationship matters seriously right now, and is unwilling to put up with a potential partner who is fickle or unwilling to do the relationship thing for the long haul. At the same time, she feels cautious, and recognizes that certain tests need to be passed to ascertain the quality of a partnership. If all pasts muster, she's quite willing to cement the relationship.

For those of who you have bemoaned your miserable sex life, Mars stations direct on Wednesday. That was one long retrograde cycle! On Tuesday, the Leo Full Moon accentuates the need to stand out from the crowd. We all want to feel special, yet most of us only need to be center stage in one person's life, not thrust into the public spotlight. The effects of this past Sunday's Cancer Full Moon lingers on, as Mars and Jupiter continue to dance with each other and the Sun. On Monday, the Capricorn Sun opposes retrograde Mars in Cancer, and on Wednesday, Mars opposes Jupiter. And all this over the backdrop of a Winter Solstice ushered in by Mercury and Jupiter's earlier entrance into Capricorn.

Mars would rather be in his granddaddy Saturn's sign -- where he is exalted -- than in Mama's Boy Cancer. In essence, the planets of opportunity and will are enjoying the fruits of their labor at the top of the mountain, while Mars is stuck rehashing the past in therapy ... and guess who's to blame for his problems? The Sun and Jupiter are getting all the girls -- because they have status and fat wallets -- while Mars feels nearly impotent. The shrink suggests that Mars not let Jupiter egg him on to walk up to the prettiest girl when he goes clubbing. Either her boyfriend will beat him up, or Mars won't be able to "rise to the occasion" once he's alone with her. Best to continue exploring why he keeps on choosing women who turn into his mother.

On Sunday, Venus enters Sagittarius. After spending most of December in hot-and-heavy Scorpio, the love planet gets a breath of fresh air, emerging from the dark, dank bedroom to go for a brisk walk in the park. Ah, the freedom! Scorpio was possessive and controlling, but now you can go ahead and do whatever you want! There are adventures to be had, and many willing travel companions.

On Tuesday, Venus in Scorpio trines Uranus. This is a complex aspect, for the love planet is pulled in two different directions. Transiting in Scorpio, Venus yearns to go deep, ploughing through fear and resistance to reach the core of intimate connection. The Cancer Full Moon on Sunday conjoins Mars and opposes Jupiter. You become painfully aware that you're still not getting any action. Jupiter would ordinarily spur Mars on to take some stupid risks to meet someone, but both planets are in the signs of their "fall." Might as well sit this one out. The best you can do is sort through old family photos and have a good laugh at how silly your relatives look.

This is a good week for love, with Venus making "soft" (beneficial) aspects to the planets of idealism.

On Monday, Venus in Libra trines Neptune. There cannot be a more romantic and dreamy aspect in the astrological dictionary. Libra is the sign of relationships, and the planet of love makes a generous angle to the planet of fantasy and idealism. The heights of Venus-Neptune are beautiful music and Love in its purest form. Although Neptune puts on the soft-focus lens to obscure the harsh realities of wrinkles and character flaws, a little bit o' delusion is far better than the outright lies that may come with a harsher aspect between these two planets -- so enjoy the movie!

The week closes on Sunday with Venus sextile Jupiter in Sagittarius. Venus-Jupiter is the combination of luxury and sensual delight, and it helps with the finances, too (provided you don't go on a credit card spree). In air and fire signs, this aspect won't be so much about bubble baths and body rubs as about inspiring conversations and romantic trips to faraway lands.

Venus in Libra squares retrograde Mars in Cancer on Monday. You yearn for romantic dinners and leisurely walks through the fall foliage, holding hands with your beloved. Yet another part of you just wants to stay at home and hug a pillow, doing pretty much nothing. You have neither the energy nor desire to pretty yourself up to impress anyone.

The Sun enters Sagittarius on Thursday, bringing a sense of adventure and freedom. If you have Taurus, Gemini or Leo Rising, you'll sense new opportunities for expansion in romance (Leo), partnership (Gemini) or deep intimacy (Taurus).

On Saturday, Uranus stations direct in Pisces after having been retrograde since late June. Prepare once again to be shocked! If you have Leo, Virgo or Scorpio Rising, expect the unexpected in dating (Scorpio), marriage (Virgo) or sex (Leo). There is a Gemini Full Moon on the same day, bringing out the fickleness in us all. Don't be surprised if you grow bored with your current lover, seeking out other sources of stimulation from the corner of your eye.

On Tuesday, the Capricorn Moon squares Venus in Libra. Although your heart desires roses and sunsets, the mood is more solemn and serious. Cautiousness prevents you from throwing yourself into the arms of a lover, unless you're sure that a romantic fling will get you that job in the corner office.

On Wednesday, the Capricorn Moon opposes Mars in Cancer. You're only willing to get down and dirty if you feel completely safe -- but your lover will be working late, so you may as well take up knitting to sublimate your desires.

Thursday, Mars goes retrograde. As the planet of sexual drive apparently turns backwards in the sky, don't be surprised if everyone's libido take a big dip. Mars won't move forward again for a while. Stay home and catch up on your TiVo'd shows until February.

On Friday, the Aquarius Moon trines Venus in Libra. Friends become lovers today. Don't be surprised if you find yourself flirting with the whole football team.
