Venus Retrograde is conjunct my Natal Venus

The following post is by an astrology writer I've long admired, April Elliott Kent. Below, she offers insight into the impact of the current Venus retrograde on readers with their natal Venus in early Virgo or late Leo. (However, the retrograde's lessons will be valuable to everyone.) I will be back on Friday. -- Jeff
Warm thanks to Jeff for inviting me over to tap dance for the troops while he’s away, and greetings to you all! I love what you’ve all done with the place – it’s full of sprightly, civilized conversation about a subject near and dear to all our hearts.

Venus conjunct your natal Venus, of course, is not that big a deal – it happens every year, in fact. We call it a Venus “return”: Venus returns to the same part of the sky that it occupied the moment you first greeted the world with a glad cry. It marks the beginning of a new one-year cycle of relationships, finance, and self-worth. Yes, once a year you get the chance to do a hard refresh of your Venusian browser and get cracking with some hot new Google searches of the heart.

But Venus retrograde conjunct your natal Venus – ah, that’s another kettle of proverbial fish. I don’t know whether your natal Venus is in Virgo or Leo – Venus will retrograde through both signs in the weeks ahead. But I do know that Venus retrogrades through the same sign every eight years, and that the last time Venus retrograde conjuncted your natal Venus was (drum roll, please):

July 30, 1999 (retrograde at 5 Virgo) to September 10, 1999 (direct at 19 Leo)

That corresponds neatly with the current retrograde period: Venus turns retrograde at 3 Virgo (on July 27) and direct at 17 Leo (September 8).

Venus retrograde asks for a reevaluation and contemplation of your attitudes about relationship, money, and values, so take some time in the coming weeks to examine that time in your life. Who were the people that meant the most to you? What was the state of your personal balance sheet? How was your health? The memories may surface slowly, a little reluctantly - Venus Retrograde was square Pluto back in 1999, after all, which means it was probably square (or just finished squaring) your natal Venus [Pluto was at 7 Sag -- ed.]. This is not a formula for happy times and golden memories, even if the ultimate result was profound personal growth. With Pluto out of the picture this time around, though, Venus retrograde conjunct your natal Venus should not be nearly so difficult for you.

Eight years is a long time - long enough to have learned a thing or two about love, money, and what’s really important. But not nearly long enough to have learned everything there is to learn. So over the next six weeks, you’re scheduled for a refresher course on your relationship with the world. Set aside time to be alone with yourself, so you can listen to your body and spirit and really hear the messages that they whisper to you. Be restrained in your spending; before making a purchase, ask yourself if what you’re buying is worth the hours of your life you traded to earn the cash. Clean up your diet, especially if you suffer from touchy digestion or kidney problems.

It’s all too easy to fall into the habit of pursuing what we think we should want, instead of what would truly bring us happiness. The purpose of Venus’ retrograde period is not to punish you by taking away your romance, bling, or nosh; rather, it’s to help you remember what’s right for you – and to help you find your way to the people and things that will make your personal Venus sing.

It's interesting to me because My natal Venus, like yours is in Venus. I feel completely re-made all ready, but I think I was needing some change, perhaps.

My Venus Return won't happen (and indeed, yours won't really come until Venus is direct again... since your natal Venus is not retrograde)until a day after my birthday (Oct. 23, birthday 22), but already, I am noting the growth of my heart.

99 was actually a good one... I committed myself to my partner and put my everything into establishing the foundation and making certain... I think it is time to let go of some of that to get into new aspects of love. I have the relationship, but how can it *really* be better? For me?

Good blog!

Hi April. Jeffrey speaks very highly of you. Thanks for writing about Venus in retrograde. Now all I need to do is find someone with natal Virgo or Leo venus so I can ask them if they're feeling any differently lately...

Welcome April,
Are you saying that what happened in 1999 will/might happened again and/or what happened in 1999 was a learning experience and something similiar might happened in 2007 and we are to pull from previous lessons?
^^does this sound confusing=}
I am trying to remember 1999,
*In my best Terminator voice*
I be back!

Thanks, eme kah!

quentin ergane, I like your analysis of your relationship. Venus retrograde is an excellent time to let go of what has been outgrown in a relationship - sort of like deadheading shriveled blooms from a plant, so new ones can grow.

Gracias, blahblah! My husband has Venus in Virgo, actually, and as a Sun Sign Libra/Moon sign Taurus is probably a good test case for the effects of Venus retrograde. So far, so good - we'll see how things go as we get a little further into the retrograde period!

Thanks, all, for making me feel welcome.

Hi, cappylady - Yes! My astrology teacher used to say that after about the age of seven, hardly anything really new happens in our lives; as we see so clearly in astrology, it's mostly a matter of the same patterns repeating over and over, just in slightly different settings and with a different cast of characters! We have many opportunities to "get things right," and I think this Venus retrograde period specifically gives us a chance to rethink some of what we set in motion back in 1999. Best of luck to you!

I like how your teacher put it-"hardly anything really new happens in our lives". I feel that way all the time. Its just now as an adult I can control my actions/reactions to things and people better than before-I HAD to listen to my mom, Now I WANT to.
She is so sarcastic and I love it

Quentin, I just read your profile. Interesting interests you got there. What is "pomosexuality?" Sounds like something I should know about since I'm in the SF Bay Area.

Very interesting. Venus went retro directly on my natal Venus/Pluto at 2 Virgo. As I mentioned on April's blog, I'd been reading about how Venus retro sometimes brings old lovers back into your life and within a couple of days I got a call out of the blue from a guy I was seeing last summer.

Nothing big happening otherwise. But when I looked back at 1999, I saw nothing specific on my calendar for when Venus went retro in July (or when it conjuncted just before or after), but I did have significant stuff happening when it turned direct - within a couple degrees of my natal Ascendant and Moon (17/18 Leo). It was my birthday, too (Sept 11), and I was visiting a long-distance beau in Santa Fe NM. Fell in love more with Santa Fe than with him! (Could I have picked a more artsy and beautiful place to be for tr Venus on my Moon?) Ah, but I was not inspired enough to pick up and move for either. This Sept Venus will go direct right on my Ascendant/Moon, and just before my birthday. Saturn will have moved in to transit my natal Venus/Pluto, alas. Should be interesting.

Welcome, Leslee. My ASC is at 4 Virgo (conj your Venus/Pluto!) and transiting Venus has been loitering in my 12th.

Hi Jeffrey. Hmm, isn't there an eclipse coming up right smack on your Ascendant? And of course, Saturn waiting in the wings... I bet you'll be writing about those!
