Meeting your social needs: The Third and Eleventh Houses
The most social houses of the natal chart are the Third, Seventh and Eleventh. These houses are naturally associated with the Air signs. The Third House (Gemini) includes neighbors, siblings, schoolmates. The Seventh House (Libra) includes significant others (spouse, mate), business partners, bestest friend, and open enemies. The Eleventh House (Aquarius) includes friends and groups.
Air concerns communication, ideas -- the mental realm. Libra, ruled by love planet Venus, is the most intimate of the Air signs. Gemini, ruled by communication planet Mercury, is more superficial and gossipy, represented by students or next-door neighbors gossiping. Aquarius, ruled by humanitarian Uranus, is the most detached of the Air signs, and can be represented by a group of like-minded individuals working together to improve conditions in the world.
This blog, by virtue of its title, has been exclusively focused on romantic relationships. Numerous readers -- judging from your questions and comments -- are not in relationships, and are struggling to navigate the world of dating and intimacy. Of course, this yearning is understandable (unless you're an Aquarius), but romantic relationships are only one aspect of our lives.
Where do the Third and Eleventh Houses fit into your life? Even if you're in a relationship, one person cannot fulfill all of your social needs. And if you're single, the people you meet in these Houses can be even more important. For without Air, we experience isolation.
Do you chat on the phone, or over IM? Are you involved in activist groups, or in online forums that cater to your interests? Do you regularly go out on the town with friends, or do you hang out in virtual bars in Second Life?
Friendships feed us, passing a familiar face on the sidewalk helps us to feel part of our community. A husband or wife is only part of the picture!

Well, it's good to know that at least my 3rd, 7th, and 11th houses have "good" placements (are compatible with natural air associations).
I have Aquarius on 3rd house cusp, Gemini on 7th house cusp, and Libra on 11th house cusp.
With my Gemini on 7th house cusp and gemini venus/mars in 7th house, I do feel superficial in love sometimes. I LOVE to have interesting conversations with my significant other, but also like my space...but my Leo mercury in 8th house complicates matters a bit. I do have urges to go THERE in conversation, get to know people by peeling their layers, but then I also feel uncomfortable if they expect me to reciprocate by revealing myself, too.
I have noticed that, despite my Cancer sun, I tend to get along very well with Libras (the sign on my 11th house cusp of friendships). My dad is a Libra, both grandfathers are Libras, and 3 of my closest friends are Libras (2 have the same birthday!). An ex that I'm still friendly with is also a Libra, same b-day as my father. :) I love how one of my Libra friends is always throwing parties and bringing together all of our friends, urging me to participate in social causes, etc.
I'm fond of my little brother, there are large geographical (3,000 miles) and age (14 years) gaps between us, which is pretty accurately summed up by Aquarius on my 3rd house cusp. We used to be closer when he was a baby, but since we didn't grow up together, well...distance has led to an unofficial estrangement. I don't know how else I experience Aquarius on 3rd house cusp. Now that I think about it, my Aquarius ex and I used to like to discuss our new ideas, possible inventions, etc. with each other.
So Aquarius people don't yearn for relationships like others? I'm an Aquarius and wonder what others' yearning is like! Can you tell me please?
