Is the sign on the Seventh House cusp a compatible match?

Tina asked yesterday in response to How to determine the planetary ruler of your Seventh House,
If the Seventh House cusp represents what we look for in a partner, does that automatically mean a compatible match for us? Or simply what we are drawn to in overall terms?
There's an "opposites attract" reasoning to the statement that "the Seventh House cusp represents what we look for in a partner." The Ascendant is the face we present to the world -- our persona -- as well as our physical body type. Hence, it makes sense that we would be drawn to a person who complements us, who "balances" us (as per Libra, which is naturally associated with the Seventh House).

But the sign on your Descendant is not automatically a compatible match. Although we may be attracted to our opposite, signs on the same axis of polarity have their share of conflicts. Additionally, there are many other factors involved in our attractions, and that's not even getting into chart comparisons.

Any planets in your Seventh House will contribute to the picture of your partner. As I mentioned previously, someone with Uranus in the Seventh may be drawn to unconventional, eccentric types. Someone with the Moon in the Seventh will look for a nurturer, and so on.

Also, the sign and house placement of the Seventh House ruler provides information about your match. To use myself as an example: I have a thing for Scorpios, probably for two reasons.
  1. I have Venus (attraction) opposite Pluto (ruler of Scorpio).
  2. The traditional ruler of my Pisces Descendant is Jupiter in Scorpio in the Third. (Jupiter's house placement plus Mercury conjunct my Descendant corresponds with my attraction to people who are good with words.)

What sign is your Mars in?

Scorpio and Pisces are both water signs, a good match.

Attraction is not formulaic.

Hi Jeffrey,

My Moon and Chiron (both in Aries & conjunct by 6 degrees) are in my 7th house (sign on the cusp in Virgo). My Moon trines my Venus (Leo) but squares my Mars (Cancer); and Pluto opposes the cusp of my 7th. Jupiter (Libra), which rules my 7th house, is in my 2nd house and trines my Mercury (Gemini).

I've not been able to keep a relationship for any considerable length of time (I'm usually the one to pull away) or find meaningful ones (that I might want to nurture). I've heard that having the Moon in the 7th makes one need to be in a relationship. I have not found that to be true for me, but am interested in finding out if these planetary aspects have any great influence in my 7th house challenges :-)

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Jeffrey,

I've been studying astrology for awhile and looking for good sites to discuss astrology with other fans/believers.

This question is interesting to me because I have a weird combo:

Sag rising (with Gem on the descendant) and Venus in Gemini. I often feel like I want two types of guys that is virtually impossible to reconcile into one.

Type 1: Fun, witty guy who can make me laugh. A thinker that can "philosophize" with me. Friends first...

Type 2: Someone who's mysterious, a deep feeler who likes to cuddle and protect me!

How in the world will I find a guy who has all of these qualities? Is it even possible? And finally, what does my Rising opposed my Venus mean in terms of relationship potential?

Also, I'm a sun Cancer (female) to complicate things a little more.

Blah Blah,

I wonder if you have Mercury (the ruler of your Gemini Descendant) in Cancer in the 8th house. That would explain your attraction to a mysterious, deep feeler who likes to cuddle.

Jeffrey, thanks for responding so quickly.

You're good! My mercury IS in the 8th house, but in Leo...who are also known as big cuddlers, but no mysterious right? :)

I tend to attract guys who want to verbally spar with me all the time, which is stimulating to a point. But I'd rather debate over something rationally (not heatedly) and then move onto cuddling, but it doesn't seem to work out that way!

The best friendship that I have with a male right now is with a Leo who has Cancer rising, Virgo merc, Libra venus/mars. He's very sweet and he doesn't like to argue, which is different for me. Boring in a good way.

My venus is in the 7th house and I really identify with that search for someone who complements (and compliments?) my personality. It's hard on me every time a relationship ends because of a lack of long-term compatibility. The men I meet never seem to want to be just friends. They think because we have good conversation and fun in the beginning, that is all there is to a relationship. It's hard convincing them they aren't "The One."

Which leads me to my original question of "Is it realistic of me to think I can find these two different types of guys in one package?" Just doesn't seem to be possible...

Blah Blah,

You sound like the kind of person who's fun, witty and philosophical (Sag Rising, Venus and Mars in Gemini), but also a mysterious, deep feeler (Scorpio Moon) who likes to cuddle (Cancer Sun). If you exist, surely a male like you is out there.

I hope you're right, Jeffrey! Hopefully there are some guys out there with multiple personalities like me. :)

Hopefully someone without a personal planet in Aries 'cause that's all I keep attracting. And that has not been fun. (No offense Aries-people) Last 6 guys I've dated have Venus in Aries, and I didn't find out until after we had been dating for awhile, had our first argument, and checked out their charts. Well, I swore no more Venus in Aries. The guy I'm getting to know now seems like fun, so I looked into his birth chart yesterday and found...moon in ARIES! Ahhhhh!!!

Dear Jeffrey, after reading the article I came to this question, I wonder if you maybe understand my problem... :

My girlfriend and I seem deeply in love however we both are interested in Astrology and we have read a couple things about the 7th House now, but we are still unsure how this affects us both...

Im a Sag. ( rising ) + Cancer ( Sun) + Taurus ( moon) + Cancer (Mercury) + Cancer ( Venus ) ( thats a lot of Cancer haha ) + Leo ( Mars )

and she is

also Sag . (rising) with a + Scorpio ( Sun) + Cancer ( moon) + Sag. ( mercury ) + the playboy combo hehe... ( VENUS + MARS in Libra )

I have Mercury in Cancer in the 7th house , while she has Moon in Cancer in the 7th house. But BOTH our House rulers are Gemini as you probably know hehe .....

I have heard some amazing stories about Opposite signs in Ascendants, in your partners charts.... ( what we have ) not sure what you think about that?

And also if you have a SUn or Moon in your partners 7th house, which we also both have? ( She got my Cancerian Sun ) ( And I got her Cancerian Moon ) ....

My question would be , is there hope you think ? :(

Really appreciate ..... :)
